CHÂTEAU LASSÈGUE, SAINT-ÉMILION
BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2018
Why It's Special: A terroir-focused, 95-point Bordeaux of power, structure, and distinction from a château promoted to Grand Cru Classé status in 2022 ... and for just $55 a bottle. That’s remarkable value in a Bordeaux, making this a wine for collectors to stock up on by the case. The fact that it can also play well with such a great variety of dishes, and in any number of settings? That just means you can call upon it for nearly every occasion in your life.
What They're Saying: Jane Anson of Decanter raved over it, calling it a "big wine ... expertly balanced by slate and crushed stone minerality, giving balance and succulence." She went on to write: "You feel the breadth and complexity to the fruit, along with juicy powerful freshness, and the gourmet packing of liquorice and chocolate."
The Story: The vineyard's 24 hectares sit on elevated, southwest-facing slopes that were first tended in the early 1700s. Soaking up the rays of the sun by day, by night they are treated to the cooling winds from the north. It would be hard to imagine a condition more conducive to the growing of world-class grapes. Add to that the fact that the vines range in age from 40 to 60 years, and emerge from limestone-concentrated soils, and you have an estate that is blessed with nearly optimal raw material to work with – whose abiding task, in the winemaking process, is largely that of stepping aside and allowing the terroir to step forward
The Specs: A blend of, primarily, Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and all from 50+ year-old vines.
Our Tasting Notes: 2018 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux, and this beaut shows off so many of the qualities that endear so many of us to the wines of that year – namely, great energy, a vivid burst of fruit, and a vivifying freshness, to go along with the depth, definition, and length that Lassègue always brings.
ABV: 14.5%
Fun Fact: Pierre and Nicolas Seillan take what they call a micro-cru approach to the land, one that looks at the matter of terroir in the most fine-grained ways.
What to Pair It With: Pan-seared duck breast; roast rack of lamb with mustard and herbs; mushroom tart; charcuterie and cheese boards
Our Guarantee: We always buy direct and only source direct, so rest assured – your wine will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance.
