"This wine hits all cylinders ... one of the great Margaux wines of the vintage."

So wrote Robert Parker of the 2010 Château Lascombes, and while the great and esteemed critic needs no one to affirm his opinions, let's! ry just say that Parker was totally on the money with this, and that his 96-point review perfectly captures the excitement of the drinking experience.

And, truly, excitement is the watchword here.

Everything you could want in a Bordeaux — concentration, intensity, depth, finesse, structure, length — it's all on electric display in this beautiful bottling.

Situated on the highest knoll of Margaux, the estate is not merely a landmark in the appellation, but foundational to the region. Its history of winemaking can be traced to at least 1700, and likely before that. In the classification of 1855, it made the list as one of 15 Seconds Crus, or Second Growths — a designation Lascombes embraces, albeit with a bit of cheek. Its tagline today is: "Second Classified Growth. First in everyone's mind."

Its staying power can be explained in part by that history and that terroir, and in part by the steady, commanding presence in the cellar of Michel Rolland, the legendary super-consultant.

At our recent tasting, one of the things that struck us about this vintage — and that of course did not escape Parker's notice, either — is the influence of oak. The lack thereof, that is. Though Lascombes has used 90% new French oak, you'll be hard put to identify its presence in the glass. Not that we're complaining. The wine speaks with such focused clarity, and is, to our mind, one of the best examples you could point to of the modern style, in part because that clarity is coaxed forth without compromising any character or soul.

When you have that blend of power and balance, you have a wine that has a chance to age slowly and beautifully. And this one has. Parker suggested five years of cellaring, and drinking for the next 25-30 years. That was in 2013. In other words: this one is ready to go right now, and we can't wait for you to see, to taste, for yourself — to experience the marvelous integration of elements, surrendering, with each long, slow sip, to the richness and dynamism.

But hurry! Bordeaux doesn't last long around here, let alone one as pedigreed and decorated as this one!
