CHÂTEAU JOANIN BÉCOT, CASTILLON COTES DE BORDEAUX
BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2018
Considered among “Bordeaux’s best current value” per Jancis Robinson, the wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux are finally beginning to attract the attention they deserve. Indeed, one of the most significant developments in Bordeaux over the past 20 years has been the increasing number of dedicated Côtes de Bordeaux producers untapping the region’s potential. Of particular note is Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, which up until 2009 was known simply as Côtes de Castillon. It is here that owner Juliette Bécot of Saint-Émilion’s prized estate, Beau-Séjour Bécot, produces Joanin Bécot, a wine that Robert Parker has called a “dead ringer for a top Pomerol.” Today we’re featuring the 2018 vintage, which Jeb Dunnuck calls a “seamless 2018 with terrific overall balance...readers looking for a brilliant Right Bank wine to put in the cellar should jump on this beauty.” The wine is beautifully aged and a fraction of the price of classified growths, coming in at sub-$25 a bottle!
Purchased by the Bécot family in 2001, the Joanin Bécot estate is located at some of the highest elevations along the Gironde in Castillon. The property has expanded since the initial purchase and the vineyards now cover around 12 hectares, with soils predominantly made of clay and limestone. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 is rich, complex, round, and supple—it is drinking incredibly well but will continue to shine for another decade. For one week we are offering an opportunity to stock up on a stellar wine from a part of Bordeaux that offers tremendous bang for your buck. Don’t miss it!
