If you’re looking for a wine with Médoc strength without the hefty price tag of the classified growths, Decanter’s James Lawther advises you “try Moulis and Listrac, the tiny communal appellations that rub shoulders with Bordeaux heavyweights Margaux, St-Julien, Pauillac and St-Estèphe. The châteaux are less trumpeted, but good value is practically guaranteed.” Located equidistant between Margaux and Saint-Julien, Listrac’s winemaking history dates back to the Middle Ages. Fourcas Dupré was established in 1843 by Jean Antoine Dupré, and today the wines are produced by the Pagès family and esteemed consultant Éric Boissenot, who also works with Lafite, Mouton, Haut Brion, and Latour. The 2017 Fourcas Dupré is bold example of the appellation: layers of dark fruit, spice, and earth come together seamlessly, with firm tannins and lively acidity completing the picture. Regularly priced sub-$25, this Grand Vin is an outstanding find even before the Concierge pricing up to 25% off!

The Fourcas plateau is known as “the roof of the Médoc,” alluding to its higher elevation and sloping vineyards, and is also the site of one of the oldest geological rock layer formations in the region (Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux). In the 1980s, Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s reinvigoration of Château Clarke brought increased attention and resources to Listrac, and the region’s wines seem to have been consistently improving since. Merlot plays a larger role in the region, giving a more immediate approachability and round character to the otherwise robust nature of the wines; that said, the Fourcas Dupré estate vineyards' soils are composed of more than 80% Pyrenean gravel, which allows for an increased focus on Cabernet Sauvignon (which thrives in gravel soils).

The Grand Vin is primarily composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2017 is robust yet elegantly layered, with precise minerality acting as the driving force—there’s a fantastic depth that far surpasses expectations at this price point. Value abounds in Bordeaux if you know where to look, and today’s Listrac made our job easy. Special Concierge pricing on the 2017 Fourcas Dupré takes each bottle below $19, while inventory lasts. It’s time to stock up!
