CHÂTEAU FLEUR CARDINALE SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU CLASSÉ

BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2016

The transformation of Chateau Fleur Cardinale into a top Saint-Émilion estate, all while maintaining a price point well below that of its neighbors, has been incredible to witness over the last two decades. Robert Parker now raves that Fleur Cardinale is “consistently one of the best St.-Émilions” that over-achieves for its classification—and the Chateau continues to build on its reputation after every vintage release. Purchased by Dominique and Florence Decoster in 2001, the owners invested heavily in the property, located next door to the renowned Chateau Valandraud. The investments immediately paid off as Fleur Cardinale was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in 2006 and rewarded with consistent high scores and acclaim along the way. Today’s offer is their most recent release from the heralded 2016 vintage, a 95-point beauty that shouldn’t be missed—especially at under $45 a bottle for purchases of 6 or more.

Located in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse on one of the highest points of the appellation east of the village of Saint-Émilion, the estate is just 23.5 hectares planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. After purchasing the property, the Decosters kept the team that had worked there for several years while also bringing on Jean-Luc Thunevin, owner of Valandraud, to help consult. Under their new direction, vines that didn’t meet the new high standards were uprooted to keep yields low and a new winery was constructed that included a gravity flow system. With the vineyard spanning over 57 separate plots on a clay-limestone plateau, each plot is picked and fermented separately to ensure quality and traceability.

The cooler, later ripening climate of the area, combined with the Decosters’ preference for picking their fruit on the riper side has done well for this outstanding estate and the 2016 is no exception. A blend of 74% Merlot, 18% Cabernet France with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine spent 14 months in new French oak. As the Decosters’ flagship wine, the 2016 has no shortage of richness—a sumptuous red that is “exotic and flamboyant in style” (Antonio Galloni). Full-bodied with soft, rounded tannins and a backbone of freshness, this is one that will last a couple of decades. For up to 20% off, this will go fast as our allocation is extremely limited. Grab a case (or two) for your collection today before we sell out!
