This 100-pointer isn’t merely another great wine from this icon — it enters the constellation, taking its place among the most legendary expressions this legendary estate ever produced. 

During our tasting, last Wednesday, with the director of the estate, Lorenzo Pasquini, he told us that 2022 has the makeup to rival one of the greatest bottlings Château d'Yquem has produced, the almost-mythic 1945. Of all the wines the estate has released over the past century, only the monumental 2009 stands as a potential rival to it. 

Astonishingly, this all-timer almost ended in failure — a vintage, Pasquini told us, of "stress and fear," but one that saw the vines respond with almost supernatural resilience. The high level of sugar becomes stunningly silky on the palate, never cloying or heavy-handed. This is the miracle of d'Yquem in 2022 — freshness that comes from dynamic sugar, creating a wine that glides rather than sticks.
Of course, what separates truly great Sauternes from merely sweet wines is that pleasing note of bitterness and salinity, elements present in abundance in this extraordinary bottling. These two dimensions are crucial — they represent all the difference between a sweet wine and a wine of noble rot, between mere pleasure and true profundity. 

James Suckling rightly awarded this masterpiece a perfect 100 points, hailing its "superb concentration," yet also noting its remarkable "balance and beauty.” High praise indeed, but it almost feels almost restrained when you’re confronted with the actual wine.
As always, to produce this golden elixir, every grape was hand-selected at harvest, ensuring that only perfect specimens touched by noble rot were allowed into the barrel. This meticulous selection results in drastically reduced yields — a single vine typically produces only enough juice for one glass of Sauternes each year. 

That’s the price of perfection. 

And this 2022 bottling is a glorious and soaring testament to that sacrifice.
