Y2K, as we all know, turned out to be not much of anything.
But this Bordeaux from 1999 did — 27 years of bottle age have produced a Ducru-Beaucaillou of gorgeous balance and elegance, with so much nuance that you can spend hours sipping and swirling and trying to tease it apart. (But good luck unlocking all its secrets.)

At a time when older Bordeaux from blue-chip estates is increasingly hard to come by (and increasingly expensive when you can find it at all), we don’t have to tell you that bottles like this one don't come along often.
The magnum format, we should add, has contributed immeasurably to what this wine has become. Wine ages more slowly in larger bottles, which is why a 27-year-old like this can still taste as though it’s got decades in front of it.
The other benefit of being in magnum: there’s just that much more of the greatness to go around.

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate has called Ducru-Beaucaillou "the quintessential Saint-Julien,” and you’ll get no argument from us on that one. And their review of the 1999 vintage, published in 2020, was fulsome in its praise, from the "wonderfully expressive” palate to the "seamless freshness [that] lightly [lifts] a great core of youthful red and black fruits” to the “lingering savory and spice layers."
Six years later, we'd add that its tannins have softened to near weightlessness, and there’s still enough acidity in the mid-palate to give the wine definition. But its purity of fruit was what blew us away at our recent tasting: the fact that it could give off such freshness and vitality after nearly three decades.
For nearly two centuries, this Super Second has produced some of Bordeaux's most consistently elegant wines, and helped to burnish Saint-Julien's reputation for refinement and longevity.
The 1999 vintage belongs squarely in that lineage.
