The Story: The names of the Majors were unveiled to the public this past November at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, by members of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. For a wine to be selected as a Major, it had to be deemed to fully represent both the appellation and the vintage, and to exhibit superior quality. The honor will hardly come as a surprise to anyone who knows anything about Rully. Located in the Côte Chalonnaise, in Burgundy, this is an estate that has remained in family hands since the 12th century, and stands as one of among a small handful of wineries that have come to be synonymous with the winemaking soul of the south of Burgundy. Its clay-limestone terroir, which can be traced all the way back to the Jurassic period, is superb, and all its grapes are hand-harvested, as they have been since the very beginning. Of its 261 hectares, 68 have been deemed Premiers Crus.
Specs: A blend of Chardonnay grapes hand-harvested from 3 plots: Le Truyer, La Curasse, and La Chaume. Vinification occurred in stainless steel tanks, and then, after fermentation, the wine was casked for 9 months in oak barrels on thin lees.
Our Tasting Notes: The nose has a gorgeous floral expression, with ripe but controlled notes of honeysuckle that give way slowly to delicate and well-integrated hints of wood. On the palate, we see a beautiful balance of elements, with fruit answered by structure and richness met with elegance. Throughout, the floral nose continues, indeed, all the way up to the gentle finish. Gorgeousness.
What to Pair It With: Quiches; seafood salad; shrimp risotto; dry cheeses; charcuterie platters.
Fun Fact: Rully has remained a family operation for – count 'em – 26 generations, or about 800 years.
