I could start by telling you this wine is an extraordinary expression and a must-have for your collection, and that you don't have to take just my word for it — that Wine Spectator ranked it #10 on its Top 100 List last year, that Wine Enthusiast awarded it 97 points, that Wine & Spirits called it a "regal, elegant Châteauneuf, plush in texture and alluring in its scents of wood, berries and earth," that Jeb Dunnuck declared it "brilliant."

But that's the result, the end product.

To understand what makes it so special, you have to start where so much exceptional wine starts: with the land.

The land of the Guigal family — maker of some of the world’s greatest wines, and a benchmark producer for the Rhône — doesn't go back a hundred or two or three hundred years. It goes back to a time before Christ walked the earth: 2,400 years, to be exact.

The winery was birthed 75 years ago, and the quality and character of that terroir is communicated in every sip of this lush and memorable Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate's flagship.

The grapes were sourced from Guigal's three vineyards, including the famed La Crau vineyard. An enviable mix of red sandstone, sandy clay, and covered limestone, with some soft sandstone at the vineyard edges, these plots contain some of the oldest soils in all of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Oldest, but also finest — literally, finest. That light, almost sandy character is known for producing wines of extraordinary suppleness.

Like our featured bottle today.

Primarily Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, and Vaccarès, it was fermented in oak vats then aged 18 months in oak and concrete.

In our tastings, we were struck by the intensity of concentration, the softness of its tannins, and the minerality and acidity that gave dimension and lift to the rich, satiny flow. (Also, by the way an hour or two of decanting brought forth a wonderful softening and perfume.)

This is a bold and noble Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and if you are a CDP-lover, or just a devotee of luxurious and lengthy reds, then this is a must-add to the collection. But act now; our quantities are limited, and Guigal always goes fast!
