2015 saw a warm, dry growing season throughout the Right Bank of Bordeaux, and is recognized as the best vintage since 2010. Such fantastic climate conditions mean savvy buyers can find superb value wines that seriously overdeliver. Cue today’s offer: the prominent 2015 Château de la Dauphine Fronsac. Consistently rated as one of the top values from Fronsac, de la Dauphine continually looks to innovate and improve practices in the vineyard and winery to better express their terroir. Under the guidance of renowned enologist Michel Rolland, the 2015 de la Dauphine—their first certified organic wine—has “gorgeous intensity, [rich and deep] texture, with clear blueberry and raspberry fruits smudged with a touch of cedar. It is plush, with salinity and sexiness, and shows off what great value the Fronsac appellation can be” (Decanter). In 2012, de la Dauphine shifted to 100% organic farming and earned official certification in 2015. The house has also been experimenting with biodynamic farming on a small parcel of vines, with plans to continue increasing the number of acres that are managed biodynamically. There are impressive soil and elevation differences across the 130 acres of estate vineyard land, which undoubtedly contributes to the complexity of all de la Dauphine’s wines. The 2015 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, sourced primarily from 28-year-old vines. It sees 12 months in 25% new French oak, purposely a judicious amount to preserve the integrity of the fruit. With decanting it can be enjoyed now, but 2015 was a powerful vintage so it will have longevity for more years to come. The house has seen prominent ownership since its foundation in the mid-1700s, and each has shown a commitment to improving the quality of the vineyards and wines.
