The Story: Straddling the border between Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc possesses some of the most extraordinary terroir on Bordeaux's Right Bank. Its vineyards share the same strip of blue clay as legendary Château Pétrus and the same gravel as outstanding Château Figeac, creating a complex quilt of soil types that the estate's vignerons use to their advantage. Each of the 237,228 vines is meticulously tended by the same vineyard worker year after year, fostering a relationship of intimate understanding between human and plant. Since 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frere acquired the estate, legendary winemaker Pierre Lurton has overseen operations, bringing his exacting standards and visionary approach to every aspect of production. The fruit, perhaps counterintuitively, is picked just under perfect ripeness, which allows grapes of differing phenolic development to be blended for increased complexity. Vinification, as always, takes place in a state-of-the-art gravity flow vat room.
