CHÂTEAU BEAUSÉJOUR

SAINT-ÉMILION

WHY BUY:
Château Beauséjour is the Right Bank's best-kept secret, which, among other things, means you can score lavishly-acclaimed and highly-coveted bottles (including, today, two 100-pointers and two 98-pointers that the critics called wines of the vintage) for insider prices. You need to jump on this, STAT, and not by the bottle but by the case. This is some of the best Bordeaux of the decade, if not of the century.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
Jane Anson awarded the 2022 vintage a perfect 100 points, calling it "exceptionally good" with "a curl of woodsmoke and cedar aromatics, peony and crushed roses, fleshy black fruits, rose petals” and writing that she adored "the switch between the texture of opulent silk and pumice stone tannic grip." Jeb Dunnuck was equally beside himself when it came to the 2020 vintage, to which he gave 100 points; "another tour de force from this incredible terroir,” he wrote, "and undeniably one of the wines of the vintage," with a "rare mix of richness, intensity, elegance, and length that are the hallmarks of a truly great wine." The 2023 vintage was just a tick off of perfection for Anson, who declared it "brilliant winemaking, one of the wines of the vintage, while Decanter’s review of the 2019 vintage likewise praised it as "one of the wines of the vintage” — another triumph for a "brilliant estate that is just delivering hit after hit."

OUR TASTING NOTES:
If we had to characterize all five wines in a handful of words, we would say that they deliver heft without heaviness. The 2022 represents Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse's first vintage from beginning to end, and what a debut statement. The aromatics keep shifting as you swirl and sip: woodsmoke morphing into roses, then something darker and more mysterious. The palate fascinates with that exact paradox that Anson mentioned: opulent silk meeting pumice stone grip. The 2020 vintage combines deep voluptuousness with striking mineral precision, and the wonder is that neither quality predominates; both are held in beautiful tension. The 2019 vintage opens wild and untamed, then smooths into something cooler and more refined, with a marvelous mineral electricity running through everything like a long and pulsating vein. Even the 2001, now twenty-three years old, still exudes freshness despite its long-developed complexity.

THE STORY:
Perhaps the most fascinating thing about Château Beauséjour is that it's been hiding in plain sight for decades. Think about it: Premier Grand Cru Classé status, a legendary 1990 vintage that scored 100 points with Robert Parker, and sitting on some of the most coveted terroir in Saint-Émilion. Yet somehow, for all that pedigree and positioning, it never quite grabbed the spotlight. But then, in 2021, ninth-generation heir Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse teamed up with Prisca Courtin from the Clarins family to take control of fewer than 7 hectares of prime Saint-Émilion real estate. Change came fast on the heels of that purchase. They brought in consultants Axel Marchal and Julien Viaud, built a state-of-the-art winery, and began crafting wines that critics and collectors fall hard for.

WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH:
These wines demand dishes that can meet them at their level of sophistication; think: duck confit with berry gastrique, standing rib roast with jus, or a cheeseboard centered around a rich, runny Époisses. With their mineral backbone, they make magic with truffle risotto or anything involving wild mushrooms. All the same, they've been made to stand on their own, and stand they do, with elegance and command.

FUN FACT:
The estate has been owned by the Duffau-Lagarrosse family since 1847, but until 2021, ownership was split among 30 different family members. Imagine trying to get 30 of your relatives to agree on anything, let alone winemaking decisions!
