Remember when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in the late 1990s, and completely reimagined the company's entire operational strategy? That’s the story, in a nutshell, of Angelus, which spent the early 2010s ditching its blockbuster style for wines that combined power and finesse.
The critics have been falling all over themselves ever since.
Wine Enthusiast deemed the 2016 vintage to be perfect, describing it as a "rich, perfumed wine, with dense tannins and intense layers of black plum and spice.” Two years later, Jeb Dunnuck completely lost his critical composure over the 2018 vintage, calling it "pure perfection," "sensational, magical,” and "flawlessly balanced.” The Wine Independent was no less enamored of the 2020 vintage — a wine, it wrote, of "pure energy" with "exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins" and "a whole firework display of mineral and floral sparks.” As for the 2022, Decanter praised its "power, focus, and detail,” and hailing it as a wine of "such class, finesse and precision."
The transformation at Angelus accelerated under winemaker Emmanuelle d'Aligny-Fulchi, who began aging Cabernet Franc in foudres instead of new oak, and pushed the estate toward organic farming.
The greater exactitude and expressiveness emboldened more than the critics. It emboldened the estate, too. In 2022, Angelus walked away from the classification system that had validated its greatness, essentially declaring its independence from external validation.
I have to admit, we love that sort of swagger and confidence.
Especially when it’s backed up by winemaking like this, the kind that makes you sit in wonder and awe at these miracles of science and art.
