BODEGA CHAKANA, 'AYNI' MALBEC, ALTAMIRA, UCO VALLEY
MENDOZA, ARGENTINA 2015
It’s no wonder that Bodega Chakana is producing some of the most talked about Malbecs coming out of Argentina today. With consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini on board (former winemaker at Antinori, former assistant winemaker at Frescobaldi and recently named one of the top five consultants in the world by Decanter) the quality of their wines is astounding, consistently over-delivering for their price points. It is their single vineyard, Finca Ayni, from Altamira (a small sub-region of the Uco Valley in Mendoza), that produces their beautifully delicious 2015 'Ayni', a voluptuous Malbec that we're thrilled to offer you today.
Firmly entrenched as Argentina’s signature grape, Malbec has flourished in Mendoza, the country’s leading wine region, delivering wines with loads of rich and ripe dark fruit that have incredible power and structure. With over 140,000 hectares of planted vineyards that cover various valleys and foothills lying at the base of the Andes Mountains, it’s the Uco Valley that is attracting some of the country’s most iconic producers, such as Catena Zapata and Achaval Ferrer. Located in the southwest part of Mendoza and situated along the Tunuyan River, the microclimate of the Uco Valley is self-contained with desert to the south and hills to the north. It’s here where Chakana, one of the most innovative wineries to come on the scene over the last few decades, that is catching the attention of the wine world.
Founded in 2002 by the Pelizzatti Family, whose ancestors produced wines in Italy as far back as the 1800s, the Chakana winery is located in Agrelo in the Lujan de Cuyo district of Mendoza on 80 hectares of vineyards. Yet it was the picturesque beauty of Altamira in the Uco Valley and the unique soils of the single vineyards there that inspired them to branch out. With dry conditions all year round and a relatively cooler climate compared to other areas of Mendoza combined with sandy loam soils intermixed with gravel covered in calcium carbonate, their single vineyard, Finca Ayni, in Altamira is conducive to producing wines of incredible depth and complexity that achieve full ripeness and fantastic structure. Using state of the art Geographical Information Systems as well as organic and biodynamic farming methods, precision is key to selecting the highest quality grapes that reflect the singular terroir.
Aged in used oak barrels for 12 months, the 2015 explodes with aromas of berries, coffee and smoke. Intense, concentrated flavors of plums, blackberries, chocolate and spices are complemented by finely grained and well-rounded tannins. With a long, hedonistic finish, the wine is extraordinary now but will age beautifully. At up to 20% off and under $35 a bottle, we suggest you stock up with a case or two!
