At our recent tasting the entire table went quiet after the first sip.
The nose, to begin with. Expansive and evocative, and it kept on coming and coming: black cassis, then sandalwood, and then that wonderful note of iodine that has long been Haut-Brion’s signature. The finish is of that rare and marvelous variety that leads you to wonder whether it might never actually end. In between, the wine is dense and dark, with Merlot (a hair over half the blend) contributing a deep plushness while Cabernet is responsible for the supple frame.
Like all great wines destined to become a classic, it has both swagger and stateliness, and is the kind of achievement we have come to expect of a house so old that Samuel Pepys was writing about it in 1663, in his legendary diary.
