CAZCANES NO. 10 EXTRA ANEJO TRIBUTO TEQUILA
JALISCO, MEXICO

The first and only spirits brand to earn a 100-point score from Wine Enthusiast is back, and in a big way, with a new luxury tequila, their first still-strength aged expression, and the highest-proof extra añejo available in the U.S. market. At only 3,650 bottles made, it's even more of a rarity.

High-proof extra añejo requires exceeding care and patience to pull off in the barrel extraction process, which is why it's so seldom attempted. Which is a shame, because the rewards are immense.

What we have here, folks, is a sublime slow sipper, closer in spirit to a premium bourbon than to other tequilas, that brings deep agave richness and character, but also a wonderful sense of balance and maturity. And thanks to its 3+ years in barrel, there's a wealth of nuance on the nose and the palate, a multi-dimensionality that complexifies the drinking experience and will have you wondering if you've maybe just tasted the future of tequila.

This one had us from the first nosing, with its transporting notes of roasted agave and caramelized fig, with a hint of oak trailing these, warm and faintly smoky. The palate carries that same depth forward, calling forth associations of toffee and baking spice. The heat builds ever-so slowly and never for a moment turns harsh. The finish is a performance all its own, long, dry, and marvelously leathery.

None of what Cazcanes does is ever a result of happenstance, or simply trial and error. It’s one of the most detail-conscious producers in the world, with a method like none other.

As always, it cooks its agave low and slow in an autoclave: that means eight hours under gentle pressure and residual heat, and with natural cooling that concludes the process. Fermentation is open-air only, with wild, naturally occurring yeast, and then all spirits are given a double-distillation through traditional alembic stills.
That’s laborious and tedious and slow, but it’s also what makes what you’re drinking so enthralling.

The current steward of this obsessive operation is the Master Distiller, Francisco "Chico" Jimenez Lazcarro, who took command at NOM 1614 in 2022 and shepherded this exact expression into American oak barrels the following year.

It’s called Tributo, because Cazcanes has intended to pay honor to the people who gave their labor and their time to the company over the past decade. To listen to the roll call of names is to hear a bunch of titles that would make for some killer movies … The Moonshiner Humberto. The Master Don Chico. The Pathfinder Jose. The Jimadores of El Valle. The Water Guardians of Navichi Springs … Each one is recognized for his place in the story and given his due.

A simple small gesture, but exactly the kind of artisanal, soulful touch that tells you this daring outfit is not some cold corporation. Get yours today!
