CASTIGLION DEL BOSCO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

TUSCANY, ITALY 2018

Why Buy: Forbes wrote last year that Castiglion del Bosco produces Brunellos "outstanding enough to inspire plenty of passion," and the three we're privileged to be able to bring you today – the 97-point Brunello Riserva Millecento 2016, the 95-point Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago 2018, and the 93-point Brunello di Montalcino 2018 – are testament to that truth. Intensity, depth, power, length: all the qualities you know and love in a Brunello are here, and in glorious abundance.

What They're Saying: A wine of "power and finesse," "intense aromas," and "big, muscular tannins [that] grab hold of the finish, with ample fruit in reserve," wrote Wine Spectator of the Riserva Millecento, only 834 cases of which were made (and only 15 cases of them imported). Aromatics are also a calling card of the Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago, with James Suckling hailing the "fascinating nose,” the “excellent balance,” the “velvety but not chewy tannins,” and the “long, tasty finish. You want to drink this now, but it will continue to improve with age." As for the Brunello di Montalcino, Decanter swooned over its drinkability: "the freshness of the vintage sing[s] from the glass, with finesse, aromatic intensity, and classic Sangiovese aromas."

The Story: The force behind Castiglion del Bosco is, surprisingly, not a winemaker but a designer: Italian fashion mogul Massimo Ferragamo. A passionate devotee of Brunello, he fell in love with the Capanna vineyards the first time he visited Castiglion del Bosco. He purchased the estate two decades ago, and promptly embarked on a renovation that would bring a humble, working winery to world-class renown. That he has done, thanks to an expert team of oenologists and agronomists, including Cecilia Leoneschi, his winemaker, who works with utmost care and exactitude in crafting these wines.

Our Tasting Notes: It takes considerable skill and sensitivity to produce Brunellos like this, which combine the best of the new style with the old style. The exhilarating result? Wines that have size and heft, but that can also dance; that are wonderfully mature but also fresh and energetic.

Fun Fact: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is one of the oldest DOCGs in all of Italy.

What to Pair Them With: Pork chops with thyme and mustard; leg of lamb with rosemary; nearly any braised meats; cheese boards.
