The Story: We've long been fans of this pioneering estate, whose first Coltassala, released in 1980, was hailed by the international wine press as a Super Tuscan, and whose complex, exquisitely crafted wines went on to set the standard for a revised specification of Chianti Classico. The volcanically rich soils of Chianti Classico are partly to credit for the quality of these wines year in and year out; equal credit is due the high-elevation Coltassala vineyard, the oldest from an estate that can trace its founding all the way back to the 11th century, when it was part of a fortified village on the border between the nation-states of Florence and Siena. The earliest reports of winemaking can be pinpointed to 1172. The Coltassala vineyard is rife with superior clones of ancient Sangiovese vines, and it is impossible to miss the old-vine character in their wines, in which a wonderful earthiness is answered by a stately elegance.
Our Tasting Notes: The Coltassala has it all: heft, depth, and length, but also beautiful acidity and minerality. There is also the characteristically alluring Coltassala bouquet, alive with aromas of fresh flowers, vibrant citrus, and dark berries.

What to Pair Them With: The Coltassala should be set aside for special meals (the richer, the better — think: long braises, roasted game, bone-in chops of any kind), or slow sipping on the porch or by a fire.
