CASISANO, BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

TUSCANY, ITALY 2016

“Trends come and go," Pierangelo Tommasi likes to say, "but elegance never goes out of style."

We love that quote, almost as much as we love the six estates that Tommasi and his family operate — no more, perhaps, than Casisano.

Which not only remains one of the great values in Brunello at a time when price tags throughout the region are soaring, but year in and year out wins our enduring admiration for the quality and consistency of its terroir-driven wines.

Like the classically-styled charmer we bring you today, one of the stars of their portfolio: their eponymous 93-point Casisano 2016. Wine Spectator called it a "stylish yet firmly-structured red" whose "harmonious ... ripe fruit balances resonant tannins, ending with a fine iron-tinged finish."

Growing conditions in southern Tuscany that year could not have conspired to produce a more optimal Brunello, and with its gorgeous acidity and ripe tannins it is poised, we think, for a glorious maturation — making this a remarkable investment at a special Concierge Family price of less than $53 a bottle.

Brunellos, as you know, are built to express themselves more fully as they age, and in Casisano, we have one of the purest expressions of the Sangiovese grape

Located in southern Montalcino, Tuscany, between the towns of Sant’ Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the Casisano estate is blessed with an abundance of natural advantages, from the high altitude of its old-vine vineyards to its soils rich in galestro stones. Terroir is king at Casisano, and the Tommasis understand that their job is to ensure that the purity of fruit comes through in the glass.

That they have done, and then some, with the 2016 vintage.

Hand-picked and macerated for 25 days on their skins, the grapes were fermented using natural yeasts in both stainless steel tanks and conical wooden vats — a mix that many Brunello vintners have been turning to of late. After fermentation, the grapes matured in Slavonian oak casks for 36 months before blending and were given an additional six months' rest in bottle.

Because no French barriques were used, or new oak, the wine itself shines through all the more, or, to put it another way: you're shown the subtler pleasures of a more classically-styled Brunello, in which elegance matters as much as robustness.

That foundational honesty is one of the things we love about Casisano, and we hope you take advantage of this chance to stock up on a wine of power and finesse that is sure to repay your initial investment, and many times over at that. But hurry; our allocation is limited.
