Bolgheri, located in Maremma along the gorgeous Tuscan coast, is one of the most highly renowned wine growing regions in the world and one of the main reasons why wineries such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia have become so iconic. The land is unquestionably special and unique - Bordeaux varieties and blends excel here in a land dominated by Sangiovese - and high profile names such as Gaja and Antinori have firmly established themselves in this DOC of Tuscany with wines such as Ca Marcanda and Guado al Tasso. Today’s wine, the 2013 Mosaico, is a stunning Merlot-based Bordeaux blend that comes from Fattoria Casa di Terra, a producer located in the heart of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. With star winemaker, Miliano Falsini on board as consultant (he’s belonged to one of Italy’s most influential oenology groups, Gruppo Matura since 2000) this wine is a true reflection of the grapes and terroir of the region. Based on Merlot, the richness and roundness of the grape meets with the complexity of the Cabernet Franc and character of Petit Verdot in a seamless and elegant display, or “Mosaic”. From a distance the image is clear, but up close, the grape varieties show their own individual identities.

It was in the 1950s that the grandparents of the present owners of Fattoria Casa di Terra, Gessica and Giuliano Frollani, moved from the Marche to Maremma and purchased the family estate. Initially growing a variety of fruit and vegetables and producing some wine from their vineyards, it was in 2001 that the family business was transformed completely into a winery, with a modern facility completed in 2013. Located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and protected from winds by hills to the east, the estate practices sustainable viticulture on soils of clay with layers of gravel that provide excellent drainage. With good sun exposure and a summer climate softened by proximity to the sea, the grapes fully ripen yet retain incredible balance and structure.

The 2013 is fermented in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes from the vineyard and aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. Unfiltered, the wine is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot and is deep ruby in color, with aromas of cassis and ripe red fruit complemented by notes of cinnamon and coffee. Though familiar in profile (think Pomerol), as the name suggests, this is a wine that pulls together many different layers to create a masterpiece – leaving me still thinking about that seemingly unending finish!
