In the last five years, this estate’s return to glory is being heard loud and clear. As part of Wine Spectator’s Top 10 in 2013 and 2017, Stephan von Neipperg’s flagship estate, Canon La Gaffeliere, is setting the pace as one of the premier wines of Saint-Emilion. His restoration of the Canon La Gaffeliere estate, along with La Mondotte, Clos de l’Oratoire, and Chateau d’Aiguilhe has been revolutionary – a Bordeaux outsider, who lifted the estate out of its slump, not by falling back on tradition, but through modernizing the winery, winemaking and viticultural practices. Emboldened to produce the best wines of the region, Stephan von Niepperg is doing a fantastic job, and produces some of the best bang-for-your-buck values in Saint-Emilion. This estate is on a roll, and is not showing any signs of slowing down.

Today’s offer is yet another example of this Premier Grand Cru Classe that continues to defy expectations, consistently over-delivering - a Right Bank standout that is approachable, fresh and lively and “captures great fruit quality and has admirable structure – drinkable now but with ample potential,” (Richard Hemming, Master of Wine). Owner Stephan von Neipperg and wine consultant Stephane Derenoncourt keep us returning to this estate year after year, creating stunning examples of this great terroir.

After taking over the property from his father, Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg, Stephan began a process of transforming the vineyards through an ecological approach, culminating in its organic certification, one of only two Premier Grand Cru Classe estates to be certified (the other, La Mondotte). Originally a proponent of modern winemaking techniques, Stephan has reverted to a style that captured a truer expression of the land. Under oenologist Stephane Derenoncourt (Domaine de Chevalier, Clos Fourtet, Pavie-Macquin, Smith Haut Lafitte, Rubicon), the 2013 takes advantage of its location on the south side of the village of Saint-Emilion, with an abundance of clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils which allows for early maturation, a must in a vintage when full ripeness was hard to obtain.

With vines on average being 50 years old, Canon La Gaffeliere seamlessly combines opulence and power with elegance and finesse. For 2013, with lower crop yield (10 hl/ha versus 28 hl/ha from the year before), the wine is 70% Merlot. Harvested manually and double sorted, the wine was aged in 70% new oak for 15 months. The wine is remarkably structured and complex, with flavors of chocolate, spice, dark berry fruit and bright acidity. A must-have for any wine lover to drink now or hold onto for the next decade, I would suggest taking advantage of today’s offer of up to 25% off! Keep in mind that quantities are very limited, so I would also suggest moving quickly to secure your purchase. Purchases of 12 bottles come in their original wooden case.
