As one of Italy's most historic appellations, Vino Nobile's wines are some of the most important wines produced in Montepulciano. And though it's role and recognition on a global scale has dramatically changed over the years, one thing is certain - as quality soars in this often overlooked and underappreciated region, it remains one of Italy's best kept secrets. At the moment, Vino Nobile is one of the single best sources of top-notch Sangiovese in Italy. Yet, standing slightly askew from the limelight of neighboring Brunello and Chianti, the lack of recognition has given us a range of gorgeous wines that are impeccably produced for a fraction of the price. With new ownership on the rise in the region, along with young and hungry winemakers as well as an international outlook, the region is ripe for a resurgence - on a mission to reclaim its elite, pedigreed reputation. The nature of the wines of Vino Nobile are distinct - less tannic and acidic than Brunello and Chianti - and Vino Nobile's softer, more approachable tannins and ripe fruit flavors come from a combination of the particular clone of Sangiovese that is native to the region (Prugnolo Gentile) along with the particular terroir there. Balance sets the region's wines apart, yet while Brunello has muscle and Chianti can be tart, the best Vino Nobiles boast a freshness and immediacy, with an underlying layer of intense minerality. The terrific value they offer is undeniable and one of our favorite producers of the moment is Canneto.

Lying on the Western slopes of Montepulciano, the Canneto Vineyard has a long tradition of winemaking in the region. The vineyard encompasses 48 hectares with approximately 15 hectares registered for Vino Nobile. Here, the soils are comprised of heavy, stony marl and lies at an elevation of 350 to 400 meters above sea level. With a love and passion for the wines of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the current Swiss owners purchased the property in 1987 and have since poured massive investment into restoring the property. A new cellar was built, new machinery and equipment were installed and a dedication to the land led to a noticeable improvement in quality over the years and has gained international attention. Our offer today is one of their top wines, the 2012 Vino Nobile Riserva, which has been matured in oak casks for three years. For up to 25% off of today's wine, this is an incredible value that you don't want to miss!
