BRIGALDARA, AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO

VENETO, ITALY 2015

Few wines can achieve the sheer opulence of Amarone della Valpolicella: the process of semi-drying grapes, known as appassimento, is integral to the concentrated, complex flavors and higher alcohol that define the distinctive style. While power is certainly a hallmark of Amarone, the best versions balance the force with elegance. The Cesari family of the esteemed Brigaldara estate stands out among Amarone producers—indeed, has become a benchmark for the category as a whole—for their ability to craft Amarone with that precise balance of incredible power and finesse. While the house produces several stunning single-vineyard iterations (as some of you will recall from our previous offers), their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico remains the standard upon which all others are judged. Awarded 95 points from Decanter earlier this year, the 2015 is “light and graceful on the palate, in a very classical style akin to ultra-traditional Barolo, aged to a state of great harmony and finesse” (Andrew Jefford, Decanter). It is intensely aromatic and boasts flavors of strawberry, dark cherry, tobacco, and baking spice and the finely integrated tannins provide welcome structure to the velvet-textured palate.

Villa Brigaldara is located just outside the town of San Floriano within the Valpolicella growing region, and dates back to the 15th century. The estate has been owned by the Cesari family since 1929, but much of this time was spent cultivating the surrounding vineyards and selling grapes to local producers; in fact, they only began producing proprietary wines in the late 1970s. The 2015 Classico’s blend of native grapes Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella are left to dry for 120 days, and the wine itself is subsequently aged for one year in French oak barrique and two years in large Slavonian barrels. This is pure Amarone and the commitment to tradition is apparent, but the wine has a freshness and bright intensity of fruit character that brings this historic winegrowing region into the modern age. We’re thrilled to be highlighting one of our perennial favorite producers today—the ethereal 2015 Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Classico should be your go-to point of reference within the Amarone category. Though the calendar says winter is officially still a month away, the cold nights have already set in and seem to call for hearty meals and relaxing near a roaring fire in the fireplace. Fittingly enough, today’s bold, rich Italian red would be a perfect pairing with an evening spent fireside. With a limited allocation available and special Concierge price below $55, our interested customers should please secure orders soon. “Winter is coming” and bold, luxurious red wines are in order!
