BOROLI BAROLO

PIEDMONT, ITALY 2017

Deep roots plus youthful ambition: it's a combination we're seeing more and more in the wine world, as older estates are increasingly taken over by hot-shot scions with a burning desire to make their mark. And, as the younguns say nowadays: we are so here for it.

In Italy, that combo aptly describes the rising star Boroli, which we've been keeping close tabs on for a while now.

Spurred by the across-the-board excellence of the 2017 vintage for makers of Barolo — a surprise to winemakers and critics alike — we thought this was probably as good a time as any to partner with the Boroli family on an offer.

Then came our recent tasting of their portfolio, and it was quickly decided: we just had to bring you this stellar quartet of their 2017s, including their Barolo Villero, which James Suckling awarded 95 points, declaring it "focused" and "gorgeous," with "fine, creamy and integrated tannins and a long finish."

The Borolis have deep roots in Piedmont, stretching all the way back to the 1830s. The estate, however, is a relatively recent venture, having launched only in the 1990s, the vision of publishing magnates (and Piedmont natives) Silvano and Elena Boroli. Today, their son, Achille, commands the property, near Alba, in Castiglione Falletto.

The calcareous clay soils, here, are optimal for the production of rich, concentrated wines that are destined to age into something even more rarefied.

These are Barolos in the modern vein, plush but not over-ripe, with silky, polished tannins that push the wine into indulgence, but never past the point of too-muchness.

Take Boroli's 2017 Barolo Brunella, which Suckling awarded 93 points, again singling out its "creamy tannins," as well as its "soft, succulent" finish.

Or the 2017 Barolo Cerequio, another 93-point honoree; Suckling raved about its "character" and "flavorful finish."

As Boroli's star continues to ascend, its wines are only going to get more expensive. The time to stock up is now, and with these four brilliant Barolos, you can count on rich rewards for both the present and the future!
