When it comes to Spain's richest and darkest wines, there may be none that come to mind faster than the dense, inky styles of Priorat—a tiny, rocky region that is a Somm-favorite and go-to for those that have an obsession with bold, red wines. Priorat has overcome many challenges, least of which is its difficult mountainside location and rugged terrain that has traditionally relegated the region to obscurity. This terroir is the crucial factor for Priorat—the unique soil here, called Llicorella (a decomposed black slate flecked), is what has placed Priorat at the top of the wine pantheon of powerful, concentrated reds. Today we’re featuring two stunning examples of Priorat from Bodegas Perinet, a dynamic estate winery located in the heart of this isolated wine region.
Bodegas Perinet is the essence of the Priorat, a unique combination of the strong winegrowing history of the region with an eye on the future. Perinet was purchased by Napa icon Alpha Omega, who modernized the estate and built a state-of-the-art winery with innovative, Gaudí-inspired barrel caves. Alpha Omega winemaker Jean Hoefliger consults for Perinet and works closely with native Priorat winemaker Toni Sanchez-Ortiz. The estate-owned vineyards are terraced high into the mountains and span three sub-regions of the ancient Priorat: Mas Vell, Mas d’en Xes, and Pendants. These three areas encompass distinct climates and terroirs granting Perinet the unique ability to produce wines that authentically reflect the climate and terroir of Priorat.
Our first wine is the 2016 Perinet, a pure expression of the Mas d’en Xes vineyard located near the winery and less than 20 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. An authentic example of terroir, the wine comes from grapes hand harvested, picked plot by plot. Here the vineyard experiences extreme changes in weather between day and night, contributing to full-bodied styles with great acidic backbone that will age a decade or more. A blend of Garnacha, Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2016 was matured in French and American oak for 15 months. Deep ruby in color, the wine is dense, deeply layered—a “racy and expressive” Priorat that is simply sumptuous (Wine Spectator). Aromas of ripe, red fruit as well as a spicy character lead to a broad range of flavors, including black cherry, kirsch and vanilla complemented by smoky, mineral and licorice notes. As a companion to the estate’s benchmark wine, we also have the approachable 2017 “Merit.” Fresh in style, “Merit” is a blend of mainly Merlot and Syrah along with Garnacha and Carignan that shows off the fruit without the influence of oak. Bright and delicious, the wine can be enjoyed young while its bolder brother ages in the cellar. For one week only, you can add both with special Mix & Match Concierge-only pricing.
