BODEGAS TAPIZ, RETRATO POR JEAN-CLAUDE

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA 2017

Why Buy: Mendoza is the most coveted terroir in all of Argentine wine, and we're thrilled to be able to bring you one of its most prized bottlings: the 95-point Retrato por Jean Claude, a limited-production, high-elevation, single-vineyard Bordeaux blend made in collaboration with the eponymous Jean-Claude Berrouet, the legendary winemaker at Château Pétrus

What They're Saying: "Elegant" and "enchanting," Wine Enthusiast wrote, in its 95-point rave, singling out its "depth," "complexity," and "lively acidity."

The Story: Berrouet directed 44 vintages at Pétrus, and he knows a thing or two or three thousand about terroir. Drawn to the prospect of creating an Argentine wine that reflects the rich and expressive soul of Mendoza, a region whose vast potential is still being tapped, he has worked with Tapiz for more than a decade to craft a line of wines with Old World character and New World freshness and energy. Retrato — portrait, in Spanish — is the stunning result. The 2017 is the second vintage he has produced for the winery, and stands as both a major achievement and a passionate articulation of the importance and beauty of terroir. The vineyards of the San Pablo estate, in the Uco Valley, sit more than 4,400 feet above sea level, and the combination of high altitude and rocky soils could hardly be more optimal, giving the wine great intensity, highly-developed aromatics, and a wonderfully supple structure that portends long aging.

Specs: Merlot is predominant in the final blend, with very small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and trace amounts of Petit Verdot.

Our Tasting Notes: A vibrant and woven tapestry that evinces all the muscularity and power of Mendoza, but also shows a softer, more elegant side, and ultimately seduces with its finesse.

ABV: 14.2%

What to Pair It With: Grilled pork chops with apricot compote; lamb chops with roasted garlic and thyme; a tomahawk steak with a thick slab of herbed butter.

Fun Fact: Given his famed palate and nose, it comes as no surprise that Berrouet’s favorite novel should be Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, a savagely comic historical fantasy by the great German writer Patrick Süskind. The book also inspired Nirvana's song "Scentless Apprentice."
