BLANKIET ESTATE
PRINCE OF HEARTS

NAPA, CALIFORNIA 2018

Why Buy: This 97-pointer is a glorious textbook example of today's Napa Cabernets, big yet balanced, and with a fruit-forwardness that doesn't mask expressiveness and danceability. No surprise that Blankiet makes it. This superstar estate has been on a run, and the most recent vintages are an absolute high-water mark.

What They're Saying: "Bravo!" So raved Jeb Dunnuck in his 97-point paean, singling out the "stunning, Bordeaux-like nose of red and black currants, new leather, lead pencil, graphite, and bouquet garni," the "seamless, elegant texture," and the "great finish."

The Story: Nestled in the western foothills of the Mayacamas, just above the town of Yountville, Blankiet can trace its earliest beginning to 1838, with plantings from the legendary George C. Yount, the founder of the town and the first man to make wine in Napa. The estate is small, at only 6 1/2 hectares, but those hectares – besides being exposed to perfect atmospheric conditions (warmed by day from the direct morning sun, cooled by night from the breezes off San Pablo Bay) – happen to sit atop three volcanic knolls of highly variant soil composition. The result is a bonanza for winemaker Graeme MacDonald to work with: a phenomenally generative site made up of multiple single vineyards. The great Robert Parker wrote that the "world-class wines" at Blankiet combine "the extraordinary power of the site with unbelievable elegance and definition." That was in 2008, and the ensuing years have only burnished the legend of this Napa Valley standard-bearer.

Specs: A nearly even split between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with trace amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Our Tasting Notes: An impressive two-fer, delivering as it does concentration, richness, intensity, but also a kind of elegance and purity. The tannins are soft, and the integration is beautiful – you're led almost seamlessly to the long, almost savory finish. The considerable presence of Merlot (and what a great Merlot it is) can be credited for much of this richness and suppleness. Fantastic.

What to Pair It With: Charcuterie boards; a grilled and juicy tomahawk chop; a standing rib roast; a rack of lamb; a pot of cassoulet.

Fun Fact: Winemaker MacDonald is a fourth-generation Napa Valley wine grower, and a descendant of a proud and distinguished line: Robert Mondavi hailed the family as "the best grape-growers in the Napa Valley."
