BLANKIET ESTATE

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

Why Buy: At a time when a cult Napa collectible can run you close to four figures, the value proposition of Blankiet Estate has never been clearer. These are extraordinary wines at, frankly, extraordinary prices. And we're proud to report that we've just secured small allocations of three absolute beauties from their 2017 portfolio (a 97-pointer, a 96-pointer, and a 94-pointer), plus two ports that the European Tasting Panel awarded some of its highest-ever ratings (19.5/20 and 19/20).

What They're Saying: "Ranks with the top wines of the vintage," Jeb Dunnuck wrote of the 97-point, Cabernet-dominant Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard 2017: "elegant, seamless yet full-bodied and powerful" with "flawless balance, good acidity, and a big finish. This is about as good as 2017 gets." Of the Merlot-dominant Rive Droit Napa 2017, Dunnuck was equally enthused: "straight-up brilliant," he raved, with "the same elegant tannin structure found in the Proprietary Red, nicely integrated acidity, terrific purity, and a great finish." The International Wine Report awarded 94-points to the Prince of Hearts Red 2017, gushing: "A sensational wine from Blankiet ... striking aromatics ... remarkable overall balance, precision and finesse, with a core of beautiful sweet ripe fruits that expand gracefully through the finish."

The Story: The great Robert Parker wrote that the "world-class wines" at Blankiet combine "the extraordinary power of the site with unbelievable elegance and definition" — that was in 2008, and the ensuing years have only burnished the legend of this Napa Valley standard-bearer. Terroir, here, is king, and for good reason: the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains contain some of the most enviable wine real estate in the world. Blankiet's famed Paradise Hills Vineyard is an almost textbook-perfect mix of soils (sandstone, shale, white volcanic tuffs, and clay), and the micro-climate, with long hot days followed by cool, brisk nights, is optimal for concentrating the flavors of the fruit. Add to that a winemaker, Graeme MacDonald, a fourth-generation Napa Valley wine grower (Robert Mondavi hailed the family as "the best grape-growers in the Napa Valley”) with a finely-honed palate and a passion for perfection, and it's little wonder that, vintage after exceptional vintage, Blankiet continues to seduce and thrill.

Our Tasting Notes:

* The Paradise Hill Red Napa 2017 and Rive Droite Napa 2017 are as good as Napa gets, nailing the purity, definition, and balance that prove so elusive to many estates, while not sacrificing even a trace of power and intensity.

* The 2017 Prince of Hearts includes, for the first time, six barrels of fruit that were designated for the Estate Proprietary Red; the result is revelatory, elevating this bottling immeasurably: we loved its softness and elegance, and marveled at its precision and length.

* The two ports — available only via the winery or through us — are, quite simply, extraordinary, a new benchmark for American port-making, with the depth, concentration, and sustained intensity of the best of Europe. Port #5 (conceived as an homage to Vintage Dow Ports) is a multi-vintage blend from 2007 to 2016, aged in old Cognac barrels from France; Port #7 (intended to pay honor to Quinta Do Noval Nacional Ports) is the same multi-vintage blend, but aged in a combination of French oak and American Whisky barrels.

ABV: Paradise Hill Red Napa 2017, 14.3%; Rive Droite Napa 2017, 14.5%; Prince of Hearts Red 2017, 14.1%.

Fun Fact: In co-owner Claude Blankiet's previous life, he was known as the man who introduced stonewashed jeans to the American market.
