We're back with more of the gin you can't get enough of. That nobody can get enough of.
I'm referring, of course, to Monkey 47, the cult hit producer that bartenders and mixologists have elevated into a global superstar. Whether it’s the purist they aim to please with a top-tier gin-and-tonic or Negroni, or the trend-seeker in search of a cocktail that puts a fresh and thrilling spin on an old idea, Monkey 47 is the bottle they’re reaching for. Critics, too, are on board the bandwagon: The Robb Report awarded its Distiller's Cut 2020 the "Best Gin" in its Singapore's Best of the Best 2021, while Distiller.com honored one of its gins with an almost-unheard of 99 points.
We’ve obtained a small allocation of Distiller’s Cut 2022, their prize release of the year, and annually among the most hotly-anticipated releases by collectors around the world.
The 47 in the brand's name refers both to the ABV and to the number of botanicals that make up the macerate that is then distilled (in this case, twice distilled, for added purity) to become the complex gin we all know and love.
For the Distiller's cut, a special 48th is added to that macerate, and, per company tradition, it varies from year to year. For the 2022 bottling, the Monkey team ventured into the Black Forest in southwestern Germany to source it.
In just its 12th year, the company has enjoyed the kind of success most ventures only dream of. Drinks International has named it the #1 Top Trending Gin for each of the past six years — an extraordinary industry recognition, especially in light of the steep competition in the marketplace. And holiday gift guides from The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Town & Country, and Esquire have been filled with mentions of the gin.
The company's founder, former Nokia executive Alexander Stein, describes the Distiller's Cut series as "adventures of flavour," and this one is perhaps the most singular and distinct yet.
That mystery ingredient? An obscure plant called woodruff. The presence of the dried leaves is subtle but unmistakable, imparting notes of cinnamon, vanilla, and spice that play like a delicate and winding melody atop Monkey 47's characteristically rich and smooth rhythm track.
