Why Buy: Nothing that the bears the stamp of the independent bottler par excellence Berry Bros & Rudd (a fixture in the spirits world for more than 300 years), is anything less than stellar, and this pair of small-run aged rums – a 17 Year from the famed Monymusk sugar estate in Jamaica (only 449 bottles produced) and a 16 Year from Panama (only 251 bottles produced) – is by no means the exception, delivering all the hand-crafted detail the pioneering importer is known for.
The Story: The name Berry Bros. & Rudd is a virtual guarantee, not just of excellence, but of greatness. Founded in 1707 — and predating the creation of Great Britain by 9 years — the company is in a class by itself when it comes to its knowledge of wood management and oak quality. And, with six offices around the world, no other bottler has as extensive or as robust a network of contacts, which they work tirelessly and relentlessly. The game for them has always been the same: to unearth barrels of almost magical richness and complexity.
The Specs: Produced with traditional Jamaican pot stills, the Monymusk 2004 was aged in a single oak cask before being bottled in 2022. The Panama was distilled in 2006, in a copper-headed column still, and first aged in its native country, in a single barrel, before being bottled in 2021.
Our Tasting Notes: The Jamaica is a classic expression of the idiom, particularly on the nose, where big, fruity esters predominate before notes of spice emerge from beneath. The palate is rich, with unexpected bursts of ripe red berries and, underneath, hints of tar, leather and spice that lend complexity and character. The finish is long and deep. Panama is an easy-going rum, but please don't confuse its gentle disposition with an absence of complexity. On the contrary: there's a lot going on here, from the masses of ripe yellow fruit to the delicate spice to the rich molasses to the trailing notes of orange zest, apricot, and acacia honey.
ABV: Both Rums are 46% ABV.
Fun Fact: The underground cellars of Berry Bros. & Rudd, located in their historic London wine shop, once housed a famous fugitive: Napoleon Bonaparte.
