BEMBERG ESTATE

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA 2015

If you're not familiar with Bemberg Estate Wines, believe me, you're going to want to make their acquaintance — and fast.

Why?

Because this five-year-old family-owned winery is doing everything the right way — producing single-vineyard, "micro-terroir" wines from single, low-yield parcels that are limited by plot, and that are already being hailed for their tremendous aging potential. No less an eminence that the lead winemaker is none too shabby himself: the internationally-renowned Daniel Pi, whom Decanter called "an intrepid spirit" and Tim Atkin declared "among the most talented winemakers in Argentina."

A recent tasting of these precision-driven wines only confirmed that this is, indeed, a massive bright star on the rise. We're proud, and excited, to bring you five from their impressive portfolio:

  •  their 97-point Gualtallary Valle de Uco Pionero 'El Tomillo' Vineyard 2015, a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc that James Suckling called "a very sophisticated red ... Full-bodied, yet fresh and energetic at the same time"

  •  their 97-point Gualtallary Valle de Uco El Tomillo Parcela 5 La Linterna Malbec 2015, a wine "so polished and refined," Suckling wrote, "with a dreamy tannin texture" that "caresses your palate ... a finely crafted, ethereal red"

  • their 95-point Chardonnay Gualtallary Valle de Uco El Tomillo Parcela 1 La Linterna 2017, aged for 18 months between casks and barrels; Suckling hailed it for its "full body," "subtle character," and "creamy texture"

  • their 94-point Pinot Noir Los Arboles Valle de Uco Las Piedras Parcela 12 La Linterna 2015, which Suckling described as "reserved and refined," "full-bodied" yet "subtle”

  • their 93-point Cabernet Sauvignon Cafayate Salta Las Mercedes Parcela 19 La Linterna 2015, which Suckling says “shows tobacco and berry character on the nose and palate with some cedar and spice”

Even more stunning to us than the high scores is that Bemberg's inaugural red vintage was only in 2013, and that the winery only launched in 2018. But then, winemaking has long been in the Bemberg blood, dating back to at least the late 16th century, when one Conrad zum Bimberg planted his first vines in Germany. His emigrant descendants were shrewd to piggyback on the boom in Argentine wine, and to secure parcels in some of the highest-elevation areas of the country (the Calchaqui Valley, the Pedernal Valley, and the Uco Valley).

Handed the impeccable raw materials of rocky, mountainous soil, Li has turned those natural advantages into wines of uncommon varietal character, depth, and expression.

Folks, you’re going to be hearing a ton about Bemberg Estate in the years to come. This is the ideal time to stock up on some of their finest, before prices escalate. But hurry; our allocation is not large!
