When it comes to Spain’s richest and darkest red wines, there may be none that come to mind more than the dense, inky styles of Priorat. Taking advantage of the hot Mediterranean sun and poor, stony soils - locally called llicorella - where varieties such as Grenache and Carignan flourish, bodegas in the 1980s began to introduce French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, producing bold, full-bodied reds that can age for decades. These newly planted varieties plus modern production methods led to a wine revolution in the 1990s and the world took notice – and the prices of some of these first-class wines began to sky rocket. Yet many wineries in Priorat, even with generations of wine experience and rewarding, beautifully complex wines, remain undiscovered. One of these, Celler Bartolome, is an outstanding example of an estate that’s producing top quality wines yet remains under-the-radar and today we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer their stunning 2015 ‘Clos Bartolome’ – at a price point that doesn’t break the bank.
After generations of grape growing and wine making, in 1997 the Bartolome-Vernet family began to bottle its own wine from its vineyards located in Bellmunt, an area in the southwest part of Priorat where the Siurana and Montsant Rivers meet as they flow towards the Ebro. On rootstocks that are some of the first in all of Priorat to be replaced with American rootstock with the outbreak of phylloxera in the late nineteenth century, vines of Grenache and Carignan (locally called Samso) have been cultivated since the 1930s. Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced later in the 1990s and the family’s three plots, or trossos, make up just under 10 hectares of steeply-sloped vineyards. With vines as old as 40 to 80 years, the ‘Clos Bartolome’ is produced from all three plots with all three varieties, harvested by hand and matured in French oak for 12 months.

More elegant in style, the 2015 wonderfully balances the concentrated fruit and toasted flavors of oak. Intensely ruby in color, the wine has inviting aromas of ripened red berries, herbs and spices. A voluptuous, full-bodied mouthfeel and flavors of cherry, blackberry and chocolate are complemented by finely integrated oak and ripe tannins. With up to 25% and under $25 a bottle, as well as a limited allocation of only 50 cases, we expect to sell out, so this is a Roll out the Barrel offer that you will not want to miss!
