OUR TASTING NOTES:
* Discovery 2026 is one you’ll keep reaching for. Toasted oak arrives early and stays, but what surprises here is the sweetness underneath. Not the fact of it, but the various dimensions of it, with notes of burnt sugar and baked apple cobbler, a touch of sweet cream, and all this without ever tipping into sweetness for its own sake. On the palate, dried cherry and cinnamon bark take over, and the finish runs long and warm, carrying a woody note we can only describe as unfamiliar in the best possible way. That's the garryana talking. There’s nothing else out there that resembles it.
* The Lochs of Jura is the more contemplative of the two expressions. The nose is as alluring as it is unusual, giving up notes of vanilla cream, blackberry compote, and mint, with, faintly, along the edges, hints of toasted oak and cigar box. The palate turns cooler and brighter (spearmint, caramel, a light dusting of cinnamon) before the sherry influence arrives. The finish ends, unsurprisingly, with a richness and robustness that speaks to every one of the 32 months this baby spent in Scotch barrels.
THE STORY:
Founded in 2014, Bardstown Bourbon Company has spent barely a decade turning itself into one of the most closely watched names in American whiskey. No small feat in a state where distilleries measure their history in centuries. The reputation rests on two things. First, blending: Bardstown works with an enormous range of sourced and self-distilled stock, and knows how to make disparate whiskeys mix and mingle like none other. Second, finishing, where the company has been genuinely fearless.
THE METHODS:
* Quercus garryana is a white oak native to the Pacific Northwest, and it is not a wood the bourbon industry uses, largely because harvesting it is difficult and the yield is small. Bardstown had barrels hand-made by Oregon Barrel Works from hand-harvested trees, then specified a custom three-hour toast to draw out the wood's spice. The blend rested in those barrels for 4 months, and the result was a mark utterly unlike anything the whiskey would have picked up from standard American oak.
* The barrels that define the character of the Lochs of Jura came from the Isle of Jura, a remote Scottish island with only one road, and previously held single malt. Bardstown, smitten with the depth and distinctiveness of these barrels, filled them with a bespoke blend of straight bourbon and rye, and left them alone for 32 months.
THE SPECS:
* The Garryana is a blend of three bourbons (55% Indiana 10-year, 25% Kentucky 11-year, 20% Kentucky 7-year) finished for 4 months in custom-toasted garryana oak, and bottled at 112.8 proof.
* The Lochs of Jura combines 49% Indiana 11-year bourbon, 30% Indiana 10-year rye, and 21% Kentucky 12-year bourbon; it's finished 32 months in Scotch barrels (84% ex-bourbon, 16% ex-sherry) and bottled at 104 proof.
FUN FACT:
It was on the Isle of Jura that George Orwell holed up in order to write 1984 — in a farmhouse with no telephone, and at the far end of that one road in town.
