When it comes to Italian wine, Stefano Chioccioli is one of Italy’s most respected consultants, with an award-winning portfolio that includes numerous 90+ point wines as well as a perfect 100-pointer from Robert Parker for his 2000 Tua Rita Redigaffi. His experience and approach to winemaking, which includes a focus on restoring and coaxing older, often neglected vineyards to greatness, makes him a perfect match for Abruzzo and its native grape, Montepulciano. Over the last decade there has been an exciting transformation in Abruzzo away from mass-produced, rustic wines that people often associate with the region towards richer, more polished wines of incredible balance and finesse. With large cooperatives still dominating the area, it is the family-owned wineries who are leading the way in terms of quality, and Chioccioli’s work at the Barba family winery is the pinnacle of this resurgence - and at their price points, they represent some of the best values in all of Italy. Today’s wine is an impressive 90-point Montepulciano that we’re offering for as low as $14.97 per bottle! With a quality that far exceeds its price point, the 2013 Barba ‘I Vasari’ Old Vines is my go-to every day red.

The history of the Barba family in Abruzzo traces back to the middle of the 18th century, when they moved to the northern province of Teramo. Yet it wasn’t until the end of the 1950s that the winery emerged with state-of-the-art facilities and a winemaking infrastructure. With vineyards spread over 68 acres, it is their 35-year-old vines from the area of Pineto in the hills of Teramo that comprise their ‘I Vasari’ Old Vines bottling. Here the slopes are south-east facing, with soils of alluvial deposits composed of sandy silt that is slightly calcareous, leading to better drainage and grapes of extraordinary depth and concentration. While some believe that Montepulciano is a descendant of Sangiovese, its dark color and soft, ripe tannins make it more comparable to the drinkability of Barbera. With long sunny days and cool nights, the grapes are given ample time to ripen and develop further structure and richness.
The 2013 was aged in barrel for 16 months and produces a striking purple-ruby color in the glass. With aromas of black cherry, vanilla, tobacco and spice, the flavors are very pronounced and dense, complemented by approachable tannins and a long, persistent finish that make it excellent for food pairing. For today’s “Roll out the Barrel” offer, we are offering the 2013 in 6-packs and 12-packs, with up to 25% off, bringing this wine to less than $15 a bottle. As the perfect red for everyday drinking, don’t miss this opportunity to stock up!
