BALDACCI FAMILY VINEYARDS, CABERNET SAUVIGNON OAKVILLE
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2019
As Napa has evolved into a world-class destination, it's become harder and harder to find the kind of family-owned and -operated wineries who used to populate the region. Big-hearted producers who, when it comes to production, think small.
That's one reason we're such fans of Baldacci Family Vineyards, and why many small-lot collectors are just as passionate as we are.
You can taste the literal fruits of this throwback approach in their 2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, which we're proud to bring you today.
Unlike many Napa winery owners, Thomas and Brenda Baldacci didn't buy property in order to make wine; when they arrived, 25 years ago, they grew grapes and sold them to nearby estates, including Shafer, Clos du Val, and Rombauer. It wasn't until 2003 — their passion for the craft having grown steadily over the seasons — that they released their own wines. Today, the family, with son Michael directing the winemaking, owns three vineyards in the nested appellations of Calistoga, Stags Leap, and Los Carneros.
That’s remarkable growth over three decades. But the Baldaccis, for all their success, still think small, limiting yields for all their wines.
Oakville is their baby, and the 2019 bottling is a testament to what a stable growing season can bring, namely balanced acidity and natural richness and texture. Speaking of the 2019 vintage generally, Michael Baldacci has said that the wines are characterized by “supple tannins and expansiveness on the palate,” and that describes this one perfectly.
To achieve a lighter toast profile, Baldacci aged it 23 months in 65% new French oak. The mid-palate, as a result, is nicely weighted but not (thankfully) heavy, which would have overwhelmed the smooth and graceful structure.
James Suckling, in his 91-point review, singled out its tannic structure and "mild, creamy finish," and we couldn't agree more. The former speaks to its ageability, which we believe to be considerable, while the latter attests to its ability to be poured right now, also considerable.
This is, in short, one you'll want to stock up on.
Just 512 cases were made, though, and our quantity is extremely limited, so hurry!
