With two of his wines making Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list since 2009, winemaker Brennan Leighton has been capturing the attention of the wine world. Working with the iconic Charles Smith at K Vintners, Leighton continues to build on his success with each vintage, along the way showcasing the spectacular fruit coming out of Washington State. Today’s wine, the 2014 Petit Verdot from a single vineyard in Yakima Valley, is a 95-point beauty, what Jeb Dunnuck calls the “top cuvee of the estate,” and we are thrilled to offer a limited allocation.

One of Bordeaux’s classic grape varieties, Petit Verdot has found great success as a single variety in Australia, California and Washington. Sharing Cabernet Sauvignon’s thick skin, Petit Verdot can produce outstanding, age-worthy wines rich in color and full of depth. From the Olsen Brothers Vineyard at an elevation of 1200 feet, Leighton achieves full ripeness, with soils of sand and basalt adding structure and complexity. Using wild yeast fermentation with longer maceration and aged in 40% new French oak, the wine is decadent and dense, yet focused and absolutely delicious and “this wine demonstrates why” Petit Verdot is making waves in Washington (Sean Sullivan, Wine Enthusiast).

The 2014 grabs you with its deep, brooding color and aromatics of violets and blackberries. A big and powerful wine, it explodes with juicy, dark fruit and is complemented by flavors of anise and wet earth. The wine is “high on the hedonist scale” (Sullivan) and with its approachable tannins, the 2014 is enjoyable in its youth yet will age gracefully for decades to come. With just 50 cases available and for under $50, this is a wine you don’t want to miss!
