Brennan Leighton is THE upcoming winemaking superstar of Washington State that should be on every wine lover’s radar, with an impressive resume of success that continues to reach newer heights with each successive vintage. The former assistant winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle who helped craft the first vintages of Eroica, Leighton eventually became Efeste’s winemaker and would have two of his wines ranked on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list, including his 2008 Efeste Syrah ‘Jolie Bouche’ Yakima Valley, which ranked 15th in 2011. His rise was immediately noticed by Charles Smith, Washington’s iconic rogue winemaker, and in 2012 Smith hired Leighton to oversee wine production at K Vintners. As Leighton has since become one of the major forces driving the astounding quality there, Charles Smith was more than enthusiastic to underwrite Leighton’s separate project, his namesake label B. Leighton. Today we are thrilled to be the first to offer the 2015 B. Leighton ‘Gratitude’ prior to its official release - a blockbuster blend that showcases the stunning craftsmanship of this icon-in-the-making.

Although this Mourvedre-driven blend may be inspired by the wines of Bandol, Leighton crafts the wine to remain pure Washington by focusing on terroir and letting the varieties from a single vineyard speak for themselves. That single vineyard is the Olsen Brothers Vineyard, which is located along the Yakima River as it turns north at Red Mountain in Yakima Valley. The elevation here averages about 1000 feet, with soils comprised of sand and broken basalt, producing wines of extraordinary depth and richness. Using natural yeast fermentation and extended contact with the lees, along with no filtering or fining, Leighton captures unique qualities that deliver delicious complexity that will age for decades.

The 2015 Gratitude is 70% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache and 5% Syrah and is an exquisitely decadent expression of terroir. Bountiful aromas of raspberry and pepper spice lead to flavors of dark berries, exotic spices, chalk and earth, finishing with dried herbs and minerality. Full-bodied, deep in color, this wine has velvety tannins and is seamlessly balanced, and with today’s offer at the lowest price in the country, this is a must-have that can be enjoyed today and for many years to come.
