OUR TASTING NOTES:
Peat smoke leads, as you might expect, drifting up from the glass and bringing with it a wonderful (and resonant) coastal salinity and, just behind it, a touch of rich cacao. It’s on the palate that you really begin to appreciate its intensity, but also the character of that intensity, deep and earthy. What’s fascinating, and what keeps you guessing as you sip, is the notes that punch up the experience as you go (now lemon curd, now honeyed malt, now stewed plum), making this so much more than simply another smoke bomb. The finish is long and drying, characterized by ashy peat embers, a generous touch of cracked black pepper, and a lovely parting gift (as they used to say in the long-ago world of game shows): salted toffee. A masterful single malt.
THE STORY:
The Laing family didn't stumble into greatness; they'd been building toward Ardnahoe since the 1940s, accumulating whisky stocks and expertise across generations before Stewart Laing and his sons finally planted their flag on Islay's postcard-perfect northeast shores. When they did, in 2018, it marked the first new distillery on the island in nearly a generation, and all the whisky world stood at attention. And then Jim McEwan, the legendary figure behind Bowmore and Bruichladdich, signed on as production director. A force was born. As other distilleries have raced to modernize, Ardnahoe has deliberately taken the old-school path. Witness their proud use of worm tub condensers, massive copper coils that cool the spirit slowly and gently, adding a texture and complexity that faster methods simply can't match. Or their vow, that they have made good on, to draw water entirely from the island's most enigmatic loch, the deepest on Islay. FUN FACT:
Ardnahoe Loch, the distillery's water source, is the deepest on Islay, and perhaps the most intriguing, filled as it is entirely by precipitation running off the surrounding hills. Because that water has never touched mineral-rich bedrock, it's extraordinarily soft, and is a major factor in shaping the whisky's distinctive profile.
