For Ardbeg lovers, the latest release of their Traigh Bhan series has become something of an annual rite, with all the anticipatory excitement of an album drop from a pop legend.
We couldn't be more excited to have secured the hotly-anticipated Batch 4, which has sent collectors across the globe scurrying to obtain bottles.
After our recent tasting, we're prepared to say that this just might be the pinnacle of the series to date – and with it, yet another triumph for one of our favorite Islay distilleries.
Named for the "singing sands" beach on Islay's southern coast, the Traigh Banh (pronounced tri-van) series is a canny blend of tradition and innovation.
Matured in a higher proportion than usual of Oloroso sherry casks, this 19 Year Old takes the characteristic Ardbeg profile – that persistent and distinctive smokiness that fills the senses – and adds an array of dimensional elements on top: wood smoke, sea salt spray, a rich, chocolatey sweetness, and lingering notes of menthol, lemongrass, and tropical fruit.
As for the finish – sweet and peat, baby; sweet and peat.
Ardbeg is determined that the public should know that – whereas Batch 3 was bottled "In a lockdown," Batch 2 "Under a thick haar," and Batch 1 "During a storm" – this was bottled "Under a full moon."
How much the tides are to be credited for their role in this superlative single malt, I can't say, but there is undoubtedly some kind of magic in the mix.
