But I'm so pumped about this small-production single malt that I just have to tell you what's so distinct and special about it — even for an Ardbeg.

Master Distiller Bill Lumsden — Dr. Bill, as he is widely and affectionately known — has gone deep into his bag for this ‘Heavy Vapours’ General Release bottling, which the iconic Islay distiller is declaring "the most full-blown Ardbeg ever."

That's saying something, but believe you me, they're not wrong.

For the first time ever, Dr. Bill has dispensed with the use of the purifier in the distilling process. What does that mean?

It means hold onto your hat.

Without the purifier, the characteristic balance that endears so many to Ardbeg — that's little in evidence in this kickass dram. Instead, the pungent, peaty flavors remain in the liquid, and emerge from the distiller intensified, almost turbo-boosted, you might say -- giving this a powerfully concentrated character that you don't so much drink as submit to.

It's that intense.

I'd be remiss if I didn't linger a little longer on its smokiness, which is accentuated and sharpened by a marvelous palate of dark chocolate and peppermint. And on its warming spiciness, the way it fills and coats your mouth.
