ANTINORI SOLAIA

TUSCANY, ITALY 2023

Assessing the 2023 vintage in Tuscany, The Wine Advocate’s Monica Lerner concluded that it “stands as proof that great pressure can indeed give birth to diamonds.”

And Antinori's Solaia 2023 is surely one of those diamonds.

Solaia of course appears only in years that the grapes are judged extraordinary, and is made exclusively with fruit from a single, sun-drenched parcel within the storied Tignanello vineyard. The 2023 edition is a big but balanced beauty that will only get better and better — not just down the line, but also in the glass, as it continues to open and unfurl.

Antonio Galloni, in a 96-point rave for Vinous, hailed its aromatics (“blackberry, gravel, incense, dried herbs, mocha, tobacco, espresso and sweet French oak”) and praised its Cabernet Sauvignon-forward profile, which, he wrote, “speaks with tremendous eloquence” through a finish stained with “grilled herbs, tobacco, incense, leather and gravel.” And his concluding note captures it best: “there's a lot of wine here.”

Indeed, there is.

And it’s this generosity and layeredness that had us coming back for more in our recent tasting … and finding new dimensions within it, new colorations, new nuances.

It opens with a vivid expression of dark fruit before opening out into something rich and savory and complex, with an underlay of gravel and dried herb and a whisper of tobacco leaf. The tannins exude that fine-grained Antinori polish we all know and love — undeniably present but never asserting themselves — and as for the finish, it’s gorgeously delineated, with no diminishment of energy or drive.

Given all that 2023 threw at Tuscany, this is a wine that shouldn't be this graceful, this balanced, this beautiful.

Many critics singled out for commendation the top producers in the region, who used all the resources in their possession to overcome the challenges of the growing season. And perhaps no producer was more equipped to beat the odds than Antinori.

The family has been making wine since 1385, or roughly a century before Leonardo was tinkering with his flying machine in his Florentine workshop

Twenty-six generations later, the family has had no interruption in its stewardship, and remains the tenth-oldest family-owned company on Earth.

And Solaia remains their most collectible statement, as one of the most sought-after wines in the world.

In a year that was a disaster for others, it birthed us a glittering diamond.

A major achievement, and a wine you’ll want to share with old friends and break open to make some new ones, too. Secure your bottles and cases today!
