ALTESINO, BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

TUSCANY, ITALY 2016

Altesino is one of the “greatest names in Tuscan wine,” and has been a staple among wine collections for decades (James Suckling). As one of Montalcino’s top producers, their Brunellos earn top scores year after year and for a vintage like 2016, which has been lauded as one of the “greatest vintages ever,” wine collectors have made extra room in their cellars. For this iconic estate, it is their benchmark Brunello from Montosoli that is most prized and hands down one of “Italy’s best reds” (JS). Today we have allocations of this 97-point 2016 flagship as well as the impressively valued 95-point 2016 Brunello di Montalicino, giving our Concierge customers a chance to stock up on both and enjoy for decades to come.

Located in the northeastern hills of Montalcino is the 15th century Palazza Altesi, which overlooks the Altesino estate. Here the winery emphasizes traditional methods of agriculture while having a rich tradition of being at the forefront of innovation—Altesino was the first Tuscan estate to use barriques with their wine and was also one of the forerunners of the “cru” concept in Italy. 50 hectares of vines extend over six of these crus that make up the winery’s productive heart. The most coveted is Montosoli, which Wine Spectator has recognized as one of Italy’s most distinguished single vineyards. Just 5 hectares with soils of marly limestone, the unique position and particular microclimate contribute to the final wine’s complexity and elegance. Rich and full-bodied, the wine is only produced in the best vintages and will age beautifully over several decades.

Along with the Montosoli, their 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is classicly styled and hauntingly beautiful. A standard-bearer for Montalcino, their Brunello is sourced from the estate's most distinctive vineyards (Altesino, Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Macina, and Pianezzine) and matured for 42 months in Slavonian oak barrels prior to bottling. The wine is opulent yet wonderfully balanced, displaying ample aromas of violet, wild berries, tobacco, chocolate, and vanilla. The wine is rich, full-bodied and velvety, an incredible value that will age for at least 20 years. With today’s Mix & Match offer available for one week only, don't miss this opportunity to add one of the greatest names in Tuscany to your cellar!
