The Story: The massive success of Aberfeldy's recent 15-Year release, finished in a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon cask, sent Master Distiller Stephanie Macleod back to the cellars. She returned with a wry smile, knowing that the 18-Year she selected would only up the ante for all the many fans around the world who snapped up the first, Napa Cab-inflected release in the label's vaunted Red Wine Cask Collection.
The Specs: The 18-Year was aged in a combination of re-fill and hogshead casks. After being plucked from the Aberfeldy stacks, it finished for a period of around 15 months in the Napa Cabernet casks.
Our Tasting Notes: Fans of the 15-Year will note a decided deepening of the fruit notes. The age difference between a 15-Year and an 18-Year might not look striking on paper, but in the glass this shows itself to be richer and more decadent, and with a pronounced softening of the spice notes. The result? A markedly softer, more mellow dram.
