A DE FUSSIGNY VINTAGE SINGLE CASK COGNACS

COGNAC, FRANCE

Why Buy: A Cyber Monday spectacular: a library release tour of Cognac from one of our favorite producers, the small, artisanal A. de Fussigny, and at a jaw-droppingly phenomenal price — the 25 Year, 30 Year, and 50 Year are all 50% OFF!

The Story: A. de Fussigny is a craft Cognac house, the last of the Cognac houses to be located both in downtown Cognac and on the Charente River. The estate was founded in 1814 by an Italian merchant, Alfonso de Fussigny, but the label was launched "only" in 1987 — a not-inconsiderable stint of time, but in the world of Cognac, where some houses go back to the 16th century, a blip. It was created as a small operation, and it has remained that way, and this, for us, is part of its enduring appeal: that it is not too big to mind the little details. The Master Blender, Patrick Giudicelli, blends eaux-de-vies sourced exclusively from the Grand and Petite Champagne regions, each one hand-selected from among hundreds of potential candidates. The ancient cellars are hard by the iconic Charente River, which flows by placidly on the other side of the estate's fort-like gate, bathing the estate in humidity. That surface moisture is essential to the quality of these Cognacs, causing more evaporation of alcohol than water, concentrating their flavors, and also giving them a distinct, terroir character. Also of note is that Giudicelli ages all his Cognacs in Limousin and Tronçais oak barrels for up to 8 years before bottling them.

Our Tasting Notes: The 50 Year is sublimity itself, with a mellowness and seamlessness that could only come from long, graceful aging; we found it to be closer to an elixir than a spirit. The 30 Year and 25 Year are more embodied experiences, if you will, with a purity and immediacy that is seductive, like being borne away in a luxury sports car. The 18 Year is the relative baby of the group, but don't mistake youth, in this instance, for callowness; it might lack in maturity, compared to its portfolio mates, but it is a statement in its own right, equal parts richness and finesse.

Fun Fact: Limousin oak barrels are known for their high levels of tannin, which beyond imparting more depth and aromatics, also allow for longer aging.
