James Suckling awarded 98 points to the Lafaurie-Peyraguey, calling it “breathtaking,” a wine with "the most extraordinary marriage of creaminess and freshness" with an "almost weightless" finish. The Wine Advocate was enamored of the 95-point La Tour Blanche, which it described as “big, rich, concentrated and seductively oily in the mouth,” with an "unashamedly decadent” palate and a "very long and spicy” finish, and the 94-point Rayne Vigneau ("super rich and … [full of] opulence … A hedonic style for those who favor full-throttle wines."
It needs to be emphasized that Sauternes is generally underrated by the wine press, making these scores a real achievement for these estates.
Five Premier Grand Cru Classé estates from Sauternes (Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Rabaud-Promis, Rayne-Vigneau, Sigalas-Rabaud, and La Tour Blanche) contributed to this limited edition set. Not only that, but each has done something that’s never before been attempted in Bordeaux: they've each contributed a barrel of their finest 2016 wines to create the bonus sixth (and most superlative) bottle in the collection: 5 Etoile.
And man oh man that sixth bottling — what can we tell you other than that this is the very essence of Bommes terroir, conveyed in a single, sublime expression … and about as celestial as Sauternes gets.
Each individual château wine shows its particular terroir expression: some richer and more opulent, others more focused and mineral. But all balanced, complex, and transportive.
The 2016 vintage, as you well know, delivered optimal growing conditions, producing a cohort of wines that manage somehow to be both hedonistic and elegant. This set captures that duality perfectly.
