Under the guidance of Pierre Lurton and Sandrine Garbay, every grape is hand selected—sometimes requiring as many as 11 passes through the vineyard—to ensure only perfect grapes are used. This meticulous process results in roughly one vine producing one glass of Sauternes every year and though Yquem’s vineyards were safe from frost in 2017, yields were still slightly smaller than in years past. It will come as no surprise that today’s offer represents the pinnacle of excellence: ethereally rich, long-lived wines with beautiful focus.
As followers of Yquem will know, the style has been shifting to a fresher interpretation over the past decade or so, and 2017 continues this trend. It has an “incredibly rich, unctuous sweetness [that’s] beautifully marbled with bright, vivacious citrus fruit and spice flavors, while lifted by well-knit freshness, and it finishes with epic length and great depth” (LPB, Wine Advocate). There is no shortage of excellent wine produced today, but storied producers like Yquem remain at the very top as they continue to stun collectors and critics alike with their extraordinary wines. Not to be forgotten and boasting a complexity sometimes compared to fine Burgundy, ‘Y’ is a dry white wine that has been produced only 37 times in the house’s history. In the late 90s, a renewed focus was placed upon ‘Y’ and more precision and care given to its grapes. This marque has been consistently more impressive with each vintage and showcases the matchless power of Yquem’s grapes and winemaking team.
