Unapologetically bold, the 2016 Vieux Château Palon Montagne-Saint-Émilion has turned up all the dials of flavor, aroma, and texture. This is a beautiful wine that really overdelivers—with deep Concierge discounts getting this wine to below $23/bottle, this is one that Bordeaux fans should buy by the case. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: Bordeaux is an amazing region. It boasts some of the most renowned, long-lived (and expensive) wines in the world, as well as some of the best values, but these “values” can sometimes come up short on complexity. While our Saint-Émilion pick today knocks it out of the park in terms of value, there's an elegance and depth to this wine that make it drink like a much more expensive bottle. The fruit, opulent and ripe, strikes first, followed by harmonious flavors of chocolate, toasty oak spice, and mint.

The largest of the designated Saint-Émilion satellite appellations, Montagne-Saint-Émilion wines offer fantastic bang for your buck. They are characteristically full bodied and rich, presenting many of the same qualities as their more pricey Pomerol and Saint-Émilion neighbors. The appellation is planted mostly to Merlot, with a variety of soil types giving nuances to wines from the region; the montagne, or mountain, itself is the highest point of the entire Right Bank. Though the name may suggest otherwise, 2016 Vieux Château Palon is modern Bordeaux in all its glory—opulent dark fruit and creamy texture that is just too decadent to pass up.
