CHÂTEAU CANON-LA-GAFFELIÈRE, PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ, SAINT-ÉMILION

In less than a decade, Château Canon-la-Gaffelière has returned to its former glory and continues to “wow” the critics (and us) with new releases. The wines of this Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé made top 10 appearances on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year in 2013 and 2017, and was named the #2 wine on last year’s lineup. Setting the pace as one of the premier wines of Saint-Émilion, owner Stephan von Niepperg’s flagship estate is showing no signs of slowing down. As a follow up to their acclaimed 2015 vintage, the just-released 2016 knocks it out of the park as another Right Bank standout—and is a relative bargain compared to its neighbors Ausone and Pavie. Demand for these award-winning wines has been skyrocketing and we were lucky to secure a minuscule allocation for our Concierge customers. After taking over the property from his father, Bordeaux outsider Stephan von Niepperg began a process of transforming the vineyards through an ecological approach that culminated in organic certification. Canon-la-Gaffelière is one of only two Premier Grand Cru Classé estates to be certified; the other is Stephan’s second property, La Mondotte. Under the guidance of renowned oenologist Stephane Derenoncourt (Domaine de Chevalier, Clos Fourtet, Smith Haut Lafitte), Canon La Gaffelière’s 50-year-old vineyards thrive in their prime location on the south side of the village of Saint-Émilion; there is an abundance of clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils, which allows for full ripeness in any vintage.

The 2016 seamlessly combines opulence and power with elegance and finesse. A bold vintage, the wine is 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in 60% new oak barrels for 17 months. Incredibly structured and complex, this full-bodied wine maintains purity of fruit, with velvety tannins that make for a “fabulous young wine” that will age in your cellar for decades (James Suckling).
