Many producers in the Rhône Valley have deep roots and a long history of wine production, including Southern Rhône mainstay Alain Jaume et Fils. Established by Mathieu Jaume in 1826 in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the domaine is now run by the 5th and 6th generation of Jaumes, Alain and his children. The family produces wines from a number of regions throughout the Southern Rhône, and Wine Advocate claims “at the end of the day, you can’t go wrong here and the portfolio is packed with both quality and value” (Jeb Dunnuck). Their holdings include the organically farmed Clos de Sixte vineyard in the Lirac appellation, located only a few miles northwest of the Châteaneuf border. The 2015 Domaine du Clos de Sixte is a classic Rhône red blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre: the vintage is voluptuous and super concentrated, showcasing dark cherry, berry, and spice flavors up front with complexity from its nuances of herb and leather. Though it’s already had nearly five years in bottle and is perfect to enjoy now, it will easily continue to shine for another half a decade or so, which is downright amazing when you consider that Concierge pricing takes each bottle sub-$20—up to an unheard-of 37% off!
In the 14th century, the popes built a castle in Avignon, France: this new castle gave name to the region we now know as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or “the pope’s new castle.” Lirac is located only a few miles from Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s border and has a terroir and geological makeup that’s remarkably similar; before phylloxera struck, this region was often regarded as highly as its more-famous neighbor. Though the small Rhône region isn’t as recognized as Châteauneuf, the quality of its wines is often on par with (if not surpassing) the quality of Châteauneuf wines with two to three times the price tag.
