A truly exceptional find from the Haut-Médoc, the 2015 Château de Lamarque captures all that I love about old-school Bordeaux. The Lamarque fortress was first built to defend the territory from Viking attacks coming from the Gironde River, and in the 14th century, Pons de Castillon built the towers, entrance gate, and surrounding walls to create the building that still exists today. Documents date the vineyards back to the 15th century, though wine production was not officially established until after the French Revolution. Purchased in 1839 by the former owners of Château Margaux, the estate remains in the hands of their descendants to this day.
The current owners undertook in-depth research of the vineyard’s soils to better understand the diversity of the terroir in order to continue to improve vineyard practices. There are three main parcels of vines, with an average age of 35 years. In traditional Médoc fashion, the parcels are comprised of deep gravelly outcroppings (the famed soil of the region), which gives this wine its classic red plum, nutmeg, tobacco, and cedar flair. Even in the cellar, Château de Lamarque is the archetype for tradition. Each plot’s grapes are fermented separately in stainless steel and cement vats, and expertly blended to produce the final wine based on the structure and aromatics of the wines from each plot. The 2015 Château de Lamarque steals the show with its classic dark plummy fruit, spice box, chocolate, cedar and underbrush tones. The wine is dense, yet balanced, with a fresh dose of acidity, making for an extraordinarily drinkable Bordeaux.
